  • Education: Attended Kenyon College, studied law, admitted to bar in 1836
  • 1860: Appointed Attorney General by President James Buchanan
  • 1862: Appointed Secretary of War by Abraham Lincoln
  • 1868: Dismissed from his duties as Secretary of War by President Johnson, in defiance of the Tenure of Office Act, which precipitated the Impeachment of President Johnson. Stanton resigned on May 26th.
  • 1869: Appointed to the United States Supreme Court by President Ulysses Grant but he died four days after the appointment was confirmed
